By this time, you have gathered all of the information to prepare your resume and you know all of my resume tips. You now have two choices. You can write your own resume or you can take your information to a professional resume writer.
If you have a solid background in writing and grammar, then by all means, write your own resume. If not, interview several resume writers in your city and hire one that you feel will represent you properly. It’s money well spent.
If you want to write your own resume, I a format that I like to use. The body of the resume is written in Garamond 11 point font and a slightly larger font for the headings. Never use a font smaller than 11 point for the body of your resume.
The first half of this resume is designed to be easily customizable to match the job description that you are applying for. You can modify the title and value proposition of your resume to address the requirements of the role that you are applying for. The nine to twelve key words and terms in the “Strengths and Expertise” section will immediately alert the reader that you have the background necessary for the position.
I always write a brief statement under each company name that describes the primary business of the company. Unless you have worked only for Fortune 100 companies, readers will need to know something about the companies that you worked for.
Remember, the first half page of your resume is the most important. If the reader scans your resume and feels that you are qualified for the position, then she will read further. If not, the reader will not continue to read your resume no matter how well written.
✔ If you do not have a Facebook account, start one. If you do have a Facebook account, review your home page and make sure that all your contact information is correct. Also, review all the posts on your home page and delete those that are inappropriate. Facebook will be one of the tools that we will use in your job search. You may feel that Facebook is a waste of time. It’s not. Facebook has nearly 2 billion active users. Don’t be conspicuous by your absence.
Go to a local park and take a long walk. Pet everybody’s dog. See how good that makes you feel?
